A mini urban forest at the LFM
What about reconnecting our students with nature by planting a mini-forest?
In November 2022, our Year 2 and Year 7 pupils embarked on a great human adventure: planting a Miyawaki forest opposite the school.
In January 2024, all the pupils from Year 2 to Year 10 contributed to the extension of the urban forest, which now covers 800 m2 and includes 2,700 trees and 550 plants.
The Little Prince Forest celebrates the power of a community and the children’s vivid imagination to transform the world. It is a key natural asset in this urbanised area and it has become an important landmark for our school community, an example of green infrastructure for the well-being of everyone.
The botanic model of the Miyawaki forest consists in planting different layers of native shrubs and trees in a high density: rosemary, strawberry trees, pomegranates and stone pines are some of the species fit for the site. It has brought back this barren land to life and developed into a proper ecosystem where wildlife is already thriving.
The pupils are still taking care of their forest, and every day, on their way to school, they see how a dream can grow into a beautiful reality.
This project was introduced in March 2022 to the Year 2 and Year 7 pupils and it is still being carried out four years later.
Before the plantation, which took place at the end of November 2022, all the pupils worked on the tree, its role, how it functions and grows and the choice of species for our forest. This project also opened the doors to literature, urban planning, and civic commitment to the planet.
The entire LFM-La Moraleja school community took part in the forest extension at the end of January 2024.
